Local notes
Historic district doors
Much of Capitol Hill is a historic district, and many owners keep their original doors. Locks on those doors are older and shaped to fit them: replacing one with a modern deadbolt can mean cutting into a 120-year-old door. A rekey or repair often keeps the door intact.
South of the freeway, Navy Yard and the Wharf are almost all post-2010 construction. Apartments use fobs and app locks; townhouse developments use standard deadbolts. The calls here are mostly lockouts and rekeys.

Eastern Market, the Hill and the river
Around Eastern Market and Barracks Row, many houses have English basements rented out separately. That means the owner, the tenant and sometimes a property manager all need different keys to different doors. Planning it on paper first avoids mistakes.
Capitol Hill also has a lot of garden gates and fences on the alley side. Old gate latches seize up, and padlocks rust. These are inexpensive fixes that make a back yard secure again.
Near the Navy Yard and the Wharf, building managers control lobby and garage access. Your unit door is your own business; the rest goes through the front desk.
Getting to you
Game days and garages
On Nationals game days, the streets around Navy Yard fill up. If you're in a garage, tell dispatch the level and the entrance. On the Hill, cross streets help: say "7th and C SE" rather than just a house number.
Also nearby: Hill East near the stadium-armory site, Lincoln Park's grand houses and the Barracks Row shops.

Questions
Questions from this area
Will a new deadbolt damage my historic door?
It can, if the door is thin or the old lock pocket is the wrong shape. A rekey or repair avoids that.
Do you cover the Wharf and Southwest?
Yes. 20024 is included on this page.
Can you open my car in a stadium garage?
Usually, if the garage lets the locksmith in. Check with the attendant first.
Do I need permission to change a lock in a historic district?
A cylinder or lock swap usually doesn't. Replacing the door itself may; check with the historic preservation office first.
